Kiwanis Club of MariettaMajor Emphasis Framework and Organization Kiwanis - Graduate Marietta May 8, 2014
Beginning in October 2012,our Club’s Major Emphasis has been focused on the Kiwanis Technology Center at Marietta High School. • During this time, we have awarded 45 laptop computers to two classes of Juniors, and the project is funded for five additional years! • The first class is scheduled to graduate on time and was awarded ownership of their laptops at Honors Night on Monday, May 5, 2014. • There are project details and photos under the Major Emphasis tab at www.mariettakiwanis.org, including a great video put together by Mike Ward of Cobb Audio Visual Systems.
So, what’s next? • In developing the recent Major Emphasis project with its focus on technical literacy, a larger Major Emphasis framework with a comprehensive approach to literacy has been developed that ties in with the existing Graduate Marietta program designed by the Marietta City Schools. • Literacyis not just the ability to read and write, but also knowledge that relates to a specified subject, which could be anything from math, technology, health, arts, finance, reading, etc. • With that in mind, projects chosen from within this Major Emphasis framework could take many forms: a reading oasis, a teaching kitchen, a community garden, money management classes, an arts competition, a playground, etc. • Going forward, projects are to be selected from within the Major Emphasis Framework by the President and/or officer team in a collaborative effort with Marietta City Schools. • Depending upon the project, it could last part of a Kiwanis year, the entire year, or may overlap into another year. • General / Corporate / Signature Event fundraising will go to Major Emphasis projects to be allocated based on need.
