Activity #1 Explorers Timeline • Students use websites like http://library.thinkquest.org/J002678F/?tqskip1=1 and http://www.enchantedlearning.com/explorers/1500a.shtml • With a partner, students use Timeliner to show the chronology and country of origin of North American explorers. http://infographics.w3ec.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/iphonetimeline1.jpg
Activity #2 Webquest http://mset.rst2.edu/portfolios/m/malave_j/explorers_web/index.htm • Students work in collaborative groups to access websites, word process, use graphic organizers, and create a PowerPoint about explorers.
Activity #3 Collaborative Writing Homework Students create a persuasive PowerPoint presentation on one of these topics: • Students use Google Docs and with a writing partner, create two paragraphs to explain the importance of exploration.
Activity #4 Photostory3 • Students choose one North American explorer from 1500's, 1600's or 1700's. • Students find jpgs on the web or create graphics to put into PhotoStory3 to explain the following: • Technological developments (communications, transportation, science) of the time that improved the explorer’s capabilities • Interactions with Native Americans • Why did they explore? • Intentional and unintentional outcomes of their exploration • What might have been different if they had not explored?
Activity #5 Podcasting • Students write and produce a short podcast about the importance of exploration and discuss places they would like to explore
Unit Evaluation • Pre and post tests on dates, personalities, events, and outcomes of North American explorers. • Self-assessment on amount of learning, participation, and products created. • Rubric for PhotoStory3 based quality of information, graphics, organization, mechanics, and oral presentation skills
