7th Grade Math Lesson Objective: Students will determine and apply unit rates. Rates
Vocabulary • Ratio • A comparison of two values • Rate • A ratio that compares two values with different units • Unit Rate • A rate that is simplified so the denominator is 1 unit
Finding a Unit Rate Steps • Write the rate as a fraction • Use the single rate as the denominator. • Divide the numerator and denominator by the denominator. • This will give you a denominator of 1. • Be sure to include units in your final answer.
Finding a Unit Rate • Adrienne biked 24 miles in 4 hours. If she biked at a constant speed, how many miles did she ride in one hour? Step 1 Step 2 Step 3
Finding a Unit Rate • Paulo drove 220 miles on 8 gallons of gas. How many miles did he drive per gallon of gas? Step 1 Step 2 Step 3
Comparing Using Unit Rates • The prices of 3 different bags of dog food are given in the table. Which size bag has the lowest price per pound? 49.00 ÷ 40 = $1.225 per lb 23.44 ÷ 20 = $1.172 per lb 9.88 ÷ 8 = $1.235 per lb
Use a Unit Rate • Lexi painted 3 faces in 12 minutes at the Crafts Fair. At this rate, how many faces can she paint in 40 minutes? Step 1: Find the Unit Rate Step 2: Multiply the unit rate by the desired number.
Use a Unit Rate • Kimbel bought 4 notebooks for $6.32. At this same unit price, how much would he pay for 5 notebooks? Step 1: Find the Unit Rate Step 2: Multiply the unit rate by the desired number.
