John’s prayer – 3John 1.2 • 3John 1:2 “Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.” • John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” • This “abundant life” requires a new center = God vs. self • A God-centered life is the only one that truly leads to “prosperity of soul”
Keys to inner happiness & prosperity • from entering into & pursuing a personal relationship with God • from “walking on God’s path” – learning to “practice” the Word • from “walking with God” – living a Spirit filled life • from walking with God with “integrity” (whole heartedly, no compromise) • from valuing what God values: putting 1st things 1st
Key #5: from valuing what God values & putting 1st things 1st • You were designed by God to love, worship & serve God 1st • If you put 2nd things 1st, your life will be out of order & you’ll never fully experience internal prosperity • When you put 1st things 1st, God can prosper you both within & without (Psalm 1.1-3, Joshua 1.8)
OT & NT “prosperity” words • “prosper” in 3John 1.2 • Primary “prosper” word in LXX/NT = “yoo-od-o'-o” (euodoo, Greek) • Primary “prosper” word in Hebrew = “tsaw-lakh'” (tsalach, Hebrew) • #1: God-enabled success or prosperity (not just natural) • #2: God-enabled success or prosperity in relation to pursuing His purposes for your life
Impartation of strength, boldness, courage & fearlessness • Read Judges 14.5-6 • Judges 14:5-6 “… a young lion came roaring toward him. 6 The Spirit of the LORD came upon him mightily, so that he tore him …” • The Spirit “empowered” Samson (NET), “gripped” (TNK) • Like Samson, we need the Spirit to come upon our lives to fulfill our destiny & calling • Do we need impartation of strength, boldness, courage & fearlessness?
The Spirit falls again • Judges 14:19 “Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon him mightily, and he went down to Ashkelon and killed thirty of them…” • He defeated 30 Philistines at Ashkelon – begins to fulfill prophecy (Judges 13.3-5) • Judges 13.3-5: “he shall begin to deliver Israel from the hands of the Philistines” • To reach God’s purpose for our lives, the Spirit must repeatedly “come upon us”
Progressive fulfillment of God’s promise • Judges 15:14-15 “When he came to Lehi, the Philistines shouted as they met him. And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him mightily … 15 He found a fresh jawbone of a donkey, so he reached out and took it and killed a thousand men with it” • Defeats 1,000 Philistines – continues to fulfill God’s purpose • Samson detoured. We get detoured too. God did not abandon Samson. • Samson in his death kills 3,000 Philistines
Saul’s transformation • Read 1Samuel 10.5-11 • 1 Samuel 10:5-11 "9 Then it happened when he turned his back to leave Samuel, God changed his heart …10… a group of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him mightily, so that he prophesied among them….” • The Spirit changes Saul into a different man. The Spirit gave him boldness to move in the things of God • If the Spirit can change & embolden Saul, how about us?
Saul became brave for battle • Read 1 Samuel 11:1-7 • “…6 Then the Spirit of God came upon Saul mightily when he heard these words …7 …the dread of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out as one man.” • Saul defeats Ammonites & the overwhelming odds v.11 • Prosperity = looking at problems & obstacles with God’s eyes & Spirit • Do we ever face things that look like overwhelming odds?
The Spirit comes upon David • Read 1Samuel 16.11-13 • 1 Samuel 16:11-13a “…13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon David from that day forward....” • David succeeds in killing Goliath by God’s help (1Samuel 17.37, 17.45-.47) • Prosperity = fulfilling His call & purposes for our lives with His help
David’s wants Solomon to succeed • God purposes Solomon to build His house & inherit David’s kingdom (1Chronicles 22.7-13, 28.6-.10) • Read 1 Chronicles 29:19-23 • “…give to my son Solomon a perfect heart to keep Your commandments …and to build the temple, for which I have made provision…23 … and he (Solomon) prospered, and all Israel obeyed him.” • Parents, though imperfect, can lead their children into fulfilling God’s purposes
Prosperity of King Hezekiah • 2Chronicles 31:20-21 “…he (Hezekiah) did what was good, right and true before the LORD his God. 21 Every work which he began in the service of the house of God in law and in commandment, seeking his God, he did with all his heart and prospered.” • King Hezekiah prospered as He sought & obeyed God • 2Chronicles 32:29-30 “…God had given him very great wealth… 30And Hezekiah prospered in all that he did.”
Prosperity of King Uzziah • Read 2 Chronicles 26:3-5 • “…4 He did right in the sight of the LORD according to all that his father Amaziah had done. 5 He continued to seek God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding through the vision of God; and as long as he sought the LORD, God prospered him.” • God can prosper us as we put Him 1st & seek His will for our lives
Godless prosperity is also temporary • Read Psalm 37:1-10 • “7 …Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who carries out wicked schemes…9 For evildoers will be cut off …10 Yet a little while and the wicked man will be no more; And you will look carefully for his place and he will not be there.” • Pursuing “prosperity” on natural lines alone will not last – it is temporary • Hebrews 11 = “prosperity” on God’s terms
Basis for prosperity & success • Read Isaiah 55.10-12 • “10For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, And do not return there without watering the earth And making it bear and sprout, And furnishing seed to the sower and bread to the eater; 11 So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.”
Basis for prosperity & success • “11 So will My word …will not return to Me empty, Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.” • God’s Word = the seed of His promise in our lives • God’s promise for our lives is not rooted in our ability, but His! • Our faith & hope needs to be in His ability & character
God’s promise to us • 2 Chronicles 26:5 “He (Uzziah) continued to seek God … and as long as he sought the LORD, God prospered him.” • As long as we seek the Lord, God will cause us to fulfill His purpose for our lives • Prosperity = God given enablement to succeed in accomplishing His will for our lives • Success = having your name written in Heaven, having done His will on earth (Hebrews 11)
