UN AND U.S. RESPONSES • UN condemned Iraq’s invasion: trade embargo • U.S. led forces against Iraq (Operation Desert Storm) - Planes bombed military targets in Baghdad and elsewhere - Ground forces attacked Iraqi troops in Kuwait - Iraq surrendered
ONGOING TENSIONS • UN kept trade sanctions until Iraq could prove dismantled its weapons • Hussein often delayed or defied UN inspectors in their search • American and British planes periodically bombed military targets in Iraq when Iraq violated agreements
OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM • 2003: George W. Bush, Tony Blair, and other allies: Claimed Saddam had weapons of mass destruction and needed to be overthrown so invaded Iraq • Saddam captured, brought to trial, and executed in 2006 • 2005: Central Intelligence Agency: No weapons of mass destruction
