As members of cultures with the oldest living intellectual and higher order knowledges, we are committed to working with our communities to realise their aspirations.
NATSIHEC (AC) • Formed as the peak body in Australia on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Higher Education in March 2011. • Membership of the Consortium is open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people working in Higher Education.
NATSIHEC (AC) Goals • Aligned to the Australian National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Policy (NATSIEP); • Enshrine the rights of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) specifically Articles 11, 14, 18, 23 and 31;
NATSIHEC (AC) Goals (continued) • Progress, elevate and secure - past, present and future Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Knowledges to influence western education institutions (universities); and • Increase the availability of higher education for our communities; and • to develop and grow research and scholarship for and by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Our Achievements (continued) • Providing continuing sectoral representation for more than fifteen years; • Securing Indigenous Peoples’ Organisation (IPO) Status at the United Nations • Raising issues for Indigenous peoples’ participation in higher education; • Advocating for and contributing to the development and implementation of the policy advice;
Our Achievements(continued) • Provide leadership for the developments in research and curriculum for the World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium (WINHEC); • Representing Indigenous higher education activities diverse platforms;
Our Achievements • Sharing knowledge, promoting collaborations, good practice, opportunities and innovations across the sector; and • Contributing to research related to Indigenous higher education in Australia.
Our Actions • Alliances and Relationships; • Engagement and Advocacy; • Scholarship, Knowledges and Research; and • Governance and Decision Making.
Our Projects: Indigenous Employment Scoping Study Scope and nature: • gather case study information from a select group of higher education institutions; and • determine the operational and governance structures impacting Indigenous Employment across the sector.
Become a Member Who can join NATSIHEC (AC)? • Membership of the Consortium is open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people working in Higher Education. Two levels of Caucus: • National Caucus An Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person who is a senior member of staff employed by a publicly funded Australian University. • State and Territory Caucuses An Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person employed by a publicly funded university.
Benefits of a NATSIHEC (AC) Membership • Participate in a National and International movement of Indigenous peoples’ solidarity and self-determination through higher education; • Access to a national network of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people working in Australian higher education; • Access to NATSIHEC (AC) Caucuses at National and State/Territory;
Benefits of a NATSIHEC (AC) Membership (continued) • Participate as a NATSIHEC (AC) delegate to national and international forums; • Contribute to the NATSIHEC (AC) submissions to the Australian governments and international bodies; • Access to NATSIHEC (AC) members’ discussions on the NATSIHEC Google forum; and • Access to resources, conferences, events and career opportunities disseminated by NATSIHEC (AC) members.
