The European Union on your doorstep: new generation of information relays launched From 1 May 2005anyone looking for information about the EU can turn to a new set of local outlets called the “EUROPE DIRECT Information Network”. The network, spread throughout the Union, takes over from the Info-Points Europe and Carrefours, which traditionally provided the public with facts and figures on EU-related matters on the urban and rural areas respectively. Europe Direct information relays EUROPE DIRECT information relays act as an interface between citizens and the Union at local level. The mission of the network is to: • enable local citizens to obtain information, advice, assistance and answers to questions about the European Union’s institutions, legislation, policies, programmes and funding opportunities; • actively promote local and regional debate about the European Union and its policies; • allow the European institutions to improve the dissemination of information tailored to local and regional needs; • give the public the opportunity to send feedback to the European Union institutions in the form of questions, opinions and suggestions. The new information centres – 393, and for the first time also in the new member states - offer a range of services, including guides to EU law, programmes and policies, treaty texts (including the European Constitution), a public feedback mechanism (a question, comment or opinion that a citizen would like to pass to the Commission in writing) and a freephone to the EUROPE DIRECT centre on 00800 6 7 8 9 10 11. Many will also provide a TV showing “Europe by Satellite”, enabling the public to keep abreast of the latest EU news as it happens. The relays are typically chamber of commerce or local authorities.
