How are Local Foods Supported? • Regional Level • Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) – Go To 2040 Plan • County Level • Kane County 2040 Plan • 2012-2016 Community Health Improvement Plan • Fit Kids 2020 Plan • Implementation- Fit Kids 2020 Plan • Expand community gardens • Bring Link to farmers’ markets • Expand capacity to store fresh fruits and vegetables at food pantries • Help 28 Kane County schools achieve HUSSC • Healthy vending
Local Food-Kane County • Farmland Protection Ordinance - 2001 • Created Kane County Farmland Protection Commission • Gave Kane County Board authority to buy or accept donated development rights from land owners on a voluntary basis • Owners extinguish those rights to keep farmland under an agricultural conservation easement in perpetuity • Funding from riverboat grants, federal Farm and Ranchlands protection funding
Local Food – Kane County • To date, over 5,500 acres of prime farmland have been permanently protected • 30 family owned or operated farms have participated in the program • Most farms produce corn and/or soybeans for the global market
Local Food – Kane County The Health Impact Assessment (HIA) examines the health outcomes if the ordinance is amended to promote participating farms of all sizes and locations within the county to grow fruits, vegetables, dairy and meats for local consumption, particularly reaching the county’s most vulnerable populations.
