Vocabulary • Nutrition – The process by which the body takes in and uses food. • Calories – Units of heat that measure the energy used by the body and the energy that foods supply to the body. • Nutrients – Substances in food that your body needs to grow, repair itself, and to supply you with energy.

  3. More Vocabulary • Hunger – natural physical drive that protects you from starvation. • Appetite – a desire to eat.

  4. Good nutrition, quality of life, and disease • Good nutrition enhances quality of life and helps prevent disease.

  5. How family influences your food choices. • Place where you live • Culture • Knowledge on how to prepare food

  6. Eating Habits – Now and Later on in life • Now – Provides the body with the energy it needs to function and grow. You want to reduce the risk of being overweight and obese. You are also building eating habits. • Later – Reduces risk of acquiring heart disease, stroke, cancer, and osteoporosis.

  7. Food and Your Environment • Family, friends, and peers – influence foods choices • Cultural and ethnic background – corn, beans, tortillas in mexican-american homes • Convenience and Cost – busy lives • Advertising – millions spent on advertising • Emotions – boredom • Hunger and appetite
