The World Bank: In the Past • Created in 1944 during • World War II • Located in Washington D.C. • First created to help rebuild Europe • First loan given to France • In 1960, the International Development Association (IDA) joins • World Bank also joined forces with many other organizations
The World Bank: In the Present (cont.) • In the past decade, the World Bank and its partners have helped the world with: • Creating a war on HIV/AIDS • Giving many vaccines to many underdeveloped and developing countries • Makes a loan to Iraq • Created the Global Food Crisis Response Program • Gave $60 billion • Helped with restoring Indonesia • Gives $5 billion • Joins the Stop TB Partnership
World Trade Organization (WTO) • Created January 1, 1995, in Geneva, Switzerland by the Uruguay Round negotiations • 155 countries have been involved • What the WTO is: • The only global organization that deals with the rules of trade between nations. • Helps countries trade without discriminating against its trading partners • Helps lowers trading barriers • Promotes fair competition • Encourages development and economic reforms
The United Nations -After WWII the League of Nations was disassembled for failing to work -1945 - 50 Countries assembled to create the United Nations Charter -China, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, and the US all proposed ideas -June 26, 1945 - All 50 countries ratify -Officially started October 24, 1945 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cqw8-ongtY
The International Criminal Court (ICC) -After WWII small courts were made -Arrest criminals from Japan and Germany -Not permanent courts -1998 - Meeting in Rome -United Nations agreed -Purpose was to: "promote the rule of law and ensure that the gravest crimes do not go unpunished." -Only the most severe crimes -Crimes against Humanity, Genocide, Crimes of Aggression, and War Crimes
The ICC (cont.) -Officially operational on July 1, 2002 -Four Nations under ICC watch -Uganda, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Central African Republic, and Darfur -Set up arrest warrants for many criminals
America and the ICC -The US was 1 of only 7 countries -Signed what was called "Moral Leadership" but it missed the deadline -Clinton said, ""I will not, and do not recommend that my successor submit the Treaty to the Senate for advice and consent until our fundamental concerns are satisfied." -After Clinton, the US tried unsuccessfully to support it
