  1. Periodic Table

  2. Groups and Periods • Groups = The vertical columns on the periodic table • There are 18 of them • Group 18 is called the “NOBLE GASES” • Also called the “Inert Gases”

  3. Group Names • Alkali Metals (Group 1) • Alkaline Earth Metals (Group 2) • Transition Metals (Groups 3-12) • Halogens (Group 17) • Noble Gasses (Group 18)

  4. Groups and Periods • Periods = The horizontal rows on the periodic table • There are 7 of them

  5. Lanthanides and Actinides

  6. Solids/Liquids/Gases • Every periodic table indicates whether an element is solid, liquid or gas at room temperature • Look for the legend (just like on a map)

  7. Metals/Nonmetals • Look at the “zig-zag” line • Left of it = Metals (with one exception) • Right of it = nonmetals

  8. Metalloids • Have properties of metals AND nonmetals • Right on the zig-zag

  9. Atomic Number • Atomic Number = The number of PROTONS in an atom • USUALLY Number of Protons = Number of Electrons

  10. Atomic Mass • Measured in “Atomic Mass Units” • AMUs • One Proton = 1 AMU • One Neutron = 1 AMU • One Electron = 0 AMU (so small it doesn’t matter)

  11. Finding How Many Neutrons • Atomic Number tells you how many protons • One proton = 1 AMU each • Round Atomic Mass to nearest whole number • Count how many AMUs you need

  12. Atomic Number = 8 Number of Protons = 8 Total AMUs so far = 8 AMU Atomic Mass = 16 AMU 8 AMUs of mass is needed 8 Neutrons complete it Neutrons

  13. Isotopes • Isotope = Same element, different number of neutrons • Same atomic number, same number of protons, same number of electrons

  14. Atomic Mass (again) • Isotopes explain why the atomic mass is a weird decimal number • Atomic mass is the AVERAGE of ALL ISOTOPES of that element

  15. What is the group number for Carbon? iRespond Question Multiple Choice F F A.) 1 B.) 2 C.) 13 D.) 14 E.)

  16. What is the period number for Magnesium? iRespond Question Multiple Choice F F A.) 1 B.) 2 C.) 3 D.) 4 E.)

  17. Where is Gold located on the periodic table? iRespond Question Multiple Choice F F A.) Period 6; Group 11 B.) Period 11; Group 6 C.) Period 5; Group 12 D.) E.)

  18. What is the atomic number for Lead? iRespond Question Multiple Choice F F A.) 80 B.) 82 C.) 84 D.) E.)

  19. How many neutrons are in one atom of lithium? iRespond Question Multiple Choice F F A.) 2 B.) 3 C.) 4 D.) E.)

  20. How many neutrons are in one atom of oxygen? iRespond Question Multiple Choice F F A.) 8 B.) 16 C.) 32 D.) E.)
