Science Vision for SDUSD Science is an integral part of the intellectual development of a child. Interest in science begins with attitudes and values established in the earliest years through daily experiences. Students graduating from high school must have a foundation in scientific knowledge and evidence based reasoning.

CA Science Standards FOSS meets 100% of the CA Science Standards through active investigation, reading and assessment
> 25% hands-on FOSS far exceeds 25% hands-on experiences with relevant materials and live organisms
FOSS reflects current learning research; rooted in a 30-year tradition of multi-sensory science education Access for ALL students

Materials Management • All kits will continue to be refurbished at the IMC Science Materials Center • FOSS Student textbooks will remain in the classroom for the duration of the adoption • “Trees” kit will be left in the Kinder classroom at school site • Principals will be responsible for ordering kits and live materials • Live materials’ cost district-paid, year 1
Science Benchmark Assessments Grades 3-5 • Will be given to all students in grades 3-5 every 12 weeks • 30 item assessment to be administered following completion of the unit • Multiple choice questions that will be answered using scantron forms • Will provide immediate feedback to teachers about student understanding of the content
Professional Development • One hour orientation meetings in May and June • Two hours in June and July “Curriculum Implementation Training: Earth Science” • All teachers should attend • Focus on: the standards, content, materials, planning for implementation using the units of study • Physical and Life Science Implementation Training will be scheduled for Winter and Spring (prior to kit delivery)
SDUSD Units of Study for SCIENCE Include the following curriculum planning tools: • Module overview and conceptual flow • CA Science Content and I&E Standards • Pacing guide • Grade level planning and prep guide • Recommended Body of Evidence to collect for the SBRC • Available for each strand, K-5, on the SDUSD Science Website • Care and disposal of live materials • Other curriculum supports
