Obstacles to Multiculturalism • Didactic • Content • Interaction teacher-pupil
Ethiopian Names • Alem = world • Nigus = king • Nigist = queen • Brehan = light • Tesfa = hope • Desta = happiness • Fikre love • Selam = peace • Melkamu = better
An Assignment • Sit in groups of 3-4 members. • Read the consonants in the vertical axis. • Read the whole grid with the vowels in the horizontal axis . • Write your names in Amharic. • Tell the other members in your group something about your name(meaning ; who chose it? why?etc). • Each group choose a name and write it in Amharic. • Swap the names among the groups and read the name.
Reflection • How did you feel when you first got the assignment? • Did these feelings change? When? Why? • Did you learn anything about yourself or your learning style? • What part of the activity did you like/ dislike?
Points to Remember • Rely on the previous knowledge of the students. • Have positive expectations. Every student CAN succeed - let them know that. • Meaningful learning is learning by “doing”. • Your whole educational approach should be “culture friendly”. That includes: teaching material, educational aids, classroom decoration, teaching strategies, etc. • Encourage students to present information about themselves to the classmates. • Maximize opportunities for interaction: teacher- students; students-students; students-materials. • Present students with real life problems and help them to discover information required to solve them.
