  2. Human Impact • Humans affect ecosystems worldwide • Acid rain, the ozone layer, and global warming all receive a good deal of attention • However, simpler effects such as resource depletion, chemical pollution, and loss of topsoil are also human impacts on the environment

  3. Acid rain • Caused by sulfur which is sent into the air by coal-burning plants • Produces sulfuric acid, which is returned to earth as snow or rain • Destroys many forms of life

  4. Ozone depletion • The ozone layer protects us and other species from the dangerous rays of the sun • 1985-scientists found a “hole” over Antarctica • Expected to cause increases in skin cancer • Caused by chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons-used in refrigerators, air conditioners, spray cans, and styrofoam • Freon • Montreal Protocol

  5. Global warming • CO2 produced when fossil fuels are burned • Absorbs solar energy and traps heat in the atmosphere • Greenhouse effect • Rising sea levels, rainfall patterns

  6. More local problems • Chemical pollution • oil spills, mercury, DDT • Depletion of resources • species (rainforest clearing) • loss of topsoil • ground water pollution and depletion
