Humans have widespread effects on the environment, from well-known issues like acid rain, ozone depletion, and global warming to simpler yet significant impacts such as resource depletion and chemical pollution. Learn about these impacts and how to take action to protect our planet.

Human Impact • Humans affect ecosystems worldwide • Acid rain, the ozone layer, and global warming all receive a good deal of attention • However, simpler effects such as resource depletion, chemical pollution, and loss of topsoil are also human impacts on the environment
Acid rain • Caused by sulfur which is sent into the air by coal-burning plants • Produces sulfuric acid, which is returned to earth as snow or rain • Destroys many forms of life
Ozone depletion • The ozone layer protects us and other species from the dangerous rays of the sun • 1985-scientists found a “hole” over Antarctica • Expected to cause increases in skin cancer • Caused by chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons-used in refrigerators, air conditioners, spray cans, and styrofoam • Freon • Montreal Protocol
Global warming • CO2 produced when fossil fuels are burned • Absorbs solar energy and traps heat in the atmosphere • Greenhouse effect • Rising sea levels, rainfall patterns
More local problems • Chemical pollution • oil spills, mercury, DDT • Depletion of resources • species (rainforest clearing) • loss of topsoil • ground water pollution and depletion
What can you do? • Walk, ride a bike or a bus • Learn • Recycle • Limit waste
