  1. Naming Molecular Substances

  2. Molecular Substances • Molecular Substances (also called covalent compounds) are made from nonmetals bonding with nonmetals. • No charges are created on atoms. • Electrons are shared between the nonmetals. • Smallest unit of a covalent compound is calleda molecule

  3. When naming covalent compounds, prefixes are put before the name of each element to indicate how many atoms of each element are in the compound. The following prefixes are used. (Mono is never used before the first element name.) 1 = mono 2 = di 3 = tri 4 = tetra 5 = penta6 = hexa 7 = hepta8 = octa9 = nona 10 = deca

  4. Examples • CO carbon monoxide • CO2 carbon dioxide • C2H8dicarbonoctahydride • P4O10tetraphosphorusdecoxide • H2S dihydrogenmonosulfide • H2O dihydrogen monoxide

  5. Write the names of the following covalent compounds • N2H2 • H2O2 • C2H4 • P4S5 • Si2Br6 • B2Si • N2O3 • N2O5 • C2H6 • C4H10

  6. Give the formulas for the following compounds • Dinitrogentetrafluoride • Tetrasulfurtetranitride • Diboronhexahydride • Tricarbonoctahydride • Dinitrogentetraiodide • Tetraphosphorusdecoxide • Diboron trioxide • Trinitrogenpentabromide
