Vocabulary • Movement- shows the connectedness in the mobility of people and their ideas, language, goods (culture) • Location- first step in studying a place, learn of its location • Absolute Location- exact place on Earth; use the “geographic address” to identify location by using latitude and longitude • Relative Location- explains where a place is by describing what its near (by distance, direction, or a landmark) • Place- describes what it’s like there to distinguish one place from another place • Physical Features- to describe; may speak of mountains, rivers, beaches, animals, and plant life of a place • Human Environment Interaction- how humans adapt to, modify, and depend on the environment • Adapt-become adjusted to a new environment • Modify- to change the environment • Depend- to count on the environment • Regions- an area on Earth's surface that has unifying characteristics (common interests)

Examples in History • Movement- Alexander the Great spread his culture (ideas) throughout the land he conquered. • The Silk Road provided a way for traveland trading (goods). • Region- Ancient China was located in the Asian region. • The Incas were located in the South American region. • HEI- The Aztecs planted crops on the chinampas. (Depending on their environment) • The Incas created terrace farming to farm. (Depending on environment) • Location- Athens and Sparta were located in Greece. (Relative) • Mesopotamia was near two rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates. (Relative) • Place- The Inca empire was in the mountains. (Physical) • Ancient Rome was near the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. (Physical)
Human and physical features of place • Human features- describe what the people look like, or man-made features (cities, etc.) • A lot of tank tops and exercise clothes, everyone is wearing coats and scarves, etc. • Physical features- to describe; may speak of mountains, rivers, beaches, animals, and plant life of an area. • There are mountains nearby with a river right next to it, a big forest, etc. What’s the difference? -Human features speak of the people and physical features speak of naturally made features.
Positive and negative effects of h-e-i Positive Negative • Bad for the environment • Examples: • Cutting down trees • Driving cars • Littering • Factories • Good for the environment • Examples: • Planting trees • Picking up litter • Riding bikes • Walking • Recycling How do past decisions impact us today? -Different inventions were made in the past, causing us to do some HEI. For example, the invention of paper has caused us to cut down trees. Another reason is farmers using different chemicals. Different chemicals can easily get into our food when farmers use them.
