2013-2014 School year • Teachers will add one element to build authentic literacy per week • Examples include: primary sources, current events, textbook, etc. • Build students’ literacy skills throughout the year, with foci scaffolding off the previous 9 weeks
BLT FOCI- Yearly layout • 2nd semester • Third nine weeks- discussion • Fourth nine weeks- thinking maps • 1st semester • First 9 weeks- Annotation/Cornell notes (we’ll go over these in a minute) • Second 9 weeks- writing, using students’ acquired note taking skills
First nine weeks- annotation (way 1) • Underlinethe major points. • Circle keywords or phrases that are confusing or unknown to you. • Use a question mark (?) for questions that you have during the reading. Be sure to write your question. • Use an exclamation mark (!) for things that surprise you, and briefly note what it was that caught your attention. • Draw an arrow( ↵ ) when you make a connection to something inside the text, or to an idea or experience outside the text. Briefly note your connections. • Mark EX when the author provides an example. • Numerate (1,2,3...)arguments, important ideas, or key details and write words or phrases that restate them.
First nine weeks- annotation (way 2) • Red - connections - stop - here what do I really see happening. I have to think here, what is the connection. • Yellow- Vocabulary-caution- do I really understand what the meaning is with the words and phrases? Do I need clarification? • Green - Author's Point of view and Purpose - go - I understand what he/she is saying and why • Blue- Structure of the Language - I am swimming in the words - metaphor, simile, rhetorical techniques, etc. How is the author using language to get his message across.
