This Maths Workshop aims to raise standards in mental maths, problem solving, and application of Mathematics across the curriculum. It also aims to increase parents' awareness of Maths skills development and provide support strategies. The workshop will follow a structure of a mental maths starter, main teaching, skills practice activities, and a plenary.

Aims of workshop • SIP- To raise standards of children achieving level 5 and Outcome 6 • To raise standards in mental maths • To increase children’s confidence and ability in problem solving • To develop children’s ability to apply Mathematics across the curriculum. LNF
To raise parental awareness and understanding of how Maths skills are developed at Ysgol Owen Jones • To discuss ways parents can support children with Maths at home. • To experience mental maths and problem solving activities. • To understand how Maths is applied across the curriculum.
The numeracy component of the National Literacy and Numeracy Framework (LNF) sets out expectations for the development of numerical reasoning. It requires learners to do the following: • Decide for themselves what numerical skills to use • Apply their method to work towards a solution • Give coherent mathematical explanations • Reflect on the outcomes
Structure of a Maths lesson • Mental Maths starter – daily 10 mins • Main teaching • Activity skills practice • Plenary summing up of key points
Mental Maths Starter • Recall – learning previously learned facts, introducing new facts eg addition doubles and halves • Skills – add or subtract any pair of numbers • Strategies – counting on or back along number line, partitioning
