EFCC meeting, London 1999-06-17MYTHMultilingual hYpertextual Thesaurus for Healthcare Angelo Rossi Mori, CNR-ITBM, Rome Fabrizio Consorti, Univ. La Sapienza, Rome Nicola Mastidoro, Eulogos, Rome
3 generations of terminology systems • 1G - 1st generation: lists (with or without taxonomies) • 2G - 2nd generation: compositional systems with categorial structure and thesaurus of descriptors • 3G - 3rd generation: formal systems based on description logic
the CEN approach second-generation systems (2G) also known as "intermediate representation" in GALEN-IN-USE consist of: • a taxonomy of categories • semantic links with combinatorial rules (left category - link - right category) • a list of descriptors for each category
relevance of 2G systems second-generation systems are relevant in their own: • Understand and communicate the overall content and structureof a first-generation system • Assist in interfacing domain value sets with information system models • Assist in convergenceamong different terminology systems
goals of MYTH • show the approach to newcomersin a dynamic and powerful way • understand how to present a 2G thesaurus in a simple way(lowering the access barriers) • improve assistance to domain expertswho perform dissections • understand how to refine and debuga 2G thesaurus
what is MYTH ? an HTML browser to promote and "legitimate” 2G thesauri • a web-based presentation toolrealised by CNR and Eulogos(a company on language+web applications) • applied to existing thesauriprepared for independent purposesby other parties, e.g. CEN and GALEN
under preparation • index from words in different languages to descriptors, categories, semantic links • references to actual dissections • ad hoc support to perform dissections given a list of phrases in a particular language,we are producing an HTML pagewith relevant knowledgeabout each word of each phrase, with pointers to other MYTH pages
free browsing and download A policy of free diffusion and experiments • publicly available materialis transformed into MYTH pages • users are authorisedto freely browse the MYTH pages • a zipped version of the MYTH pages(conceived for local navigation)is available for download
preparation of material • we import the original files into a relational database with a standard structure • we generate the web pages with • cumulate alphabetical index of descriptors, categories, semantic links • one page for each category with descriptors and admitted links • one page with the semantic linksand the related combinatorial rules
corpora processed so far • surgical procedures from GALEN-IN-USE • nursing from CEN Short Strategic Study • archetypes from CEN prENV 13606Electronic Health Care Record Communicationpart 2, Domain Termlist as private web pages, authorisations pending
potential roles for EFCC • on presentation and diffusion • just a mirror site • a future joint refinementof the MYTH approach • on population of content • a clearing house to collect corporaand validate MYTH representations • the organisation for coordination of development and testingof the thesauri needed by CEN standards(a service complementing CEN standards)
