HOW TO PREPARE A CASE • Flip through the case • read just the first and last paragraphs • get a feel for what the case is about • Flip through the exhibits • Read the case quickly • read the first sentence of each paragraph • Decide what the action issues really are • Reread more carefully
HOW TO PREPARE A CASE(2) • Decide the analysis questions to pursue • Answer the analysis questions • Choose a course of action (considering and rejecting plausible alternatives) • Develop a plan of action • Test the plan and analysis before the class
A GOOD CASE ANALYSIS-- SOME CRITERIA • Consider different aspects and different sides; don’t take an overly narrow view • Avoid rehashing case facts; think about what you can draw out of these facts • Don’t confuse symptoms with problems • Make reasonable assumptions; don’t be frozen by insufficient information • All opportunities don’t demand action • (you have to pick and choose the opportunity to pursue) • Be realistic, deal with objectives realistically
