Facebook / twitter • (CNN) Aug 12 2011 -- British Prime Minister David Cameron thinks he's found some culprits to blame in the recent riots that have rocked London and other cities -- Facebook and Twitter. • Saying the "free flow of information" can sometimes be a problem, Cameron's government has summoned those two social-networking sites, as well as Research In Motion, makers of the BlackBerry, for a meeting to discuss their roles during the violent outbreaks.

  11. DANGERS OF FACEBOOK (FB): • Facebook is about trying to create a name for yourself (Don’t be a Nimrod! Gen 10:8-9) • FB wastes time that could be spent on more profitable things (Eph 5:16) • Creates a sense of idleness – (Mat 12:36, 1 Tim 5:13) • FB is too often used for “evil communications” (1 Cor 15:33, Eph 4:29) • Public access to personal information creates a potential danger to yourself/children • FB can lead to bad examples being spread to other young people through networking (Jam 3) • Young people choose to get advise from peers rather than parents/elders (2Chron 10:8) • Parents who don’t allow their children to be on FB, but use it themselves should consider the example they are setting (1 Tim 4:12)

DANGERS OF FACEBOOK (FB): • The information you post is owned by “Facebook” (& easily accessible to anyone) and can be used against you (e.g. career, conscientious objector) • It’s like putting a personal diary online for the world to see (what would you think about the things you posted in 5...10 years?) • Displays the Truth and yourself in a bad light • FB blurs the line of what is acceptable behaviour and what is not (e.g. “innocent” glass of wine?) • FB is leading to moral decline and apathy • Many relationships/ “friends” formed are not genuine

DANGERS OF FACEBOOK (FB): • “As the ease of communication increases, the relevance and quality of communication decreases” • The core purpose of FB is to tell the world what you are currently feeling – “Hello world! Let me tell you about me!” – Human self interest (2Tim 3:2) • Creates Egotistical Individualism – “I” Pod, “My” Space, “Face”Book..ME ME! • Portrays a false sense of the reality of everyone’s lives (everyone is a celebrity, reality soap-operas. Facebook depression)

ADVICE FOR FACEBOOK USERS: • Facebook is a time waster (set time restrictions if you are using it) • Ensure all your posts, photos, & information is a good witness of your faith (Mat 5:14) • Always consider the motives behind what you write • Don’t even start! (if you need to communicate try Skype, phone, email, letters) • Avoid Gossip, silly talk, levity (Eph 5:4) • Don’t follow the example of Nimrod to make a name for yourself

ADVICE FOR FACEBOOK USERS: • What you wouldn’t say in public, don’t say on facebook • Don’t let your interactions on FB replace real interpersonal relationships • Don’t let the increasing availability of communication define your expectations of the frequency of communication • Post wholesome thoughts/words (Phil 4:8, 1Tim 6:3) • We are most in danger when we deny the deceitfulness of sin – “Facebook isn’t a problem for me!” Jer 17:9
