  3. EZRA(more introductory material) • Ezra (Zerubbabel 538 B.C.) Haggai/Zechariah (520 B.C.) Esther (479 B.C.) Nehemiah (445 B.C.) • Literary features (Ezra): • 280 total verses (67 in Aram.) • 111 verses devoted to name registers • 44 verses devoted to letters • 3 verses devoted to proclamations • 3 verses devoted to excerpts • 10 verses devoted to prayers • 109 verses devoted to narratives • Ezra 1:1-3a is an exact repetition of 2 Chronicles 36:22-23. • Ezra 2 and Nehemiah 7:6-73 are virtually identical, Ezra noting before the departure and Nehemiah noting the actual arrivals (simplest explanation but not necessarily the best). • Ezra 4:6-23 is out of chronological order and reaches back for historical reinforcement • Between Ezra 6-7 there is a gap of about 58 years.

  4. Ezra 2:2; Nehemiah 7:7 • This particular Nehemiah and Mordecai are listed in these Biblical texts some ninety years earlier than the later mention of them in the canonical books of Esther and Nehemiah.

  7. Ezra 9 and Background • We are one hundred and fifty days past Ezra’s arrival in the Promised Land (cp. 7:9 with 10:9. • There is a pointed resemblance here to Exodus 34:11-16 and Deuteronomy 7:1-6. • Ezra received this first report from the leadership (in chapter 10 from the [followership]) and responded in dramatic fashion (cp. Ez. 9:3 with Neh. 13:25).

  10. Ezra 10:18-44

  11. Special Note: “There is no representative of the Nethinim or the descendants of Solomon’s servants. The lowest classes were the least involved in intermarriage; the pagan women were probably not very attracted to them.” The Expositor’s Bible Commentary

  12. The Ram Offering • Ezra 10:19 • The Ram Offering offered by the sons of the “priests” • A Ram Offering is offered as a Guilt Offering • See Leviticus 5:14-6:7 This offering deals with sin against God that threatens the community.
