Purpose: • The purpose of the Epipen is to administer a pre-measured dose of Epinephrine to patient with qualifying conditions.
Uses: • The treatment of signs and symptoms of a severe allergic reaction • These are airway compromise, i.e. stridor, difficulty breathing, i.e. wheezing and to reverse hemodynamic instability, i.e. hypotension and shock. These all can occur in patient having an allergic reaction
Procedure: • Remove Epipen from box. • Remove Epipen from plastic cylinder by unscrewing colored cap and always pointing black end away from you. • Grasp unit and form a fist around it with the black tip pointing away from you. • Remove gray plastic safety protective cap with administration end carefully pointed away from you.
Procedure Continued • Hold black tip near the outer thigh of the patient. • Swing and jab forcefully into the outer thigh until the unit clicks and at a 90 degree angle to the thigh. • Hold the injector firmly against the thigh for 10 seconds. • Remove the unit from the thigh and massage the area for 10 seconds.
Procedure Continued. • Carefully place the used auto-injector needle first into the plastic cylinder. • Then screw the storage cap back on completely and take device to the hospital. • Note that 85% of the liquid will stay in the auto-injector and cannot be used. • However, the patient has used the correct dose if the red flag appears in window.
Dosage Information. • Adult device called Epipen administers 0.3 mg epinephrine. • Pediatric device called Epipen Jr., administers 0.15 mg epinephrine.
