  1. Graph of Phase Changes

  2. Physical and Chemical Properties

  3. Physical Properties • Physical Properties- A property of a material that can be observed without changing the makeup of the substance. Includes: color, texture, smell, taste, sound, state of matter, boiling point, melting point, density, viscosity, hardness, magnetism, malleability What do you think a physical change would be?

  4. Physical Changes • Changing the appearance or physical property of a material • Does the chemical makeup of paper change when you color it with a crayon? • Does the chemical makeup of water change when you freeze it? • Does the chemical makeup of your hair change when you cut it? These are physical changes!

  5. Density • Density is the measurement of the amount of matter in an area. • If you were comparing a piece of metal and a piece of wood that were exactly the same size, which do you think would be more dense? How would you know? • How does the density of water change when you freeze it?

  6. Chemical Properties • Chemical Properties: A property of a material that has the ability to produce a change in the chemical makeup of the material. Includes: flammability, reactivity What do you think a chemical change would be?

  7. Chemical Changes • Changing the chemical makeup of a material • Does the chemical makeup of paper change when you burn it? • Does the chemical makeup of your hair change when you bleach it? • Does the chemical makeup of baking soda change when you add vinegar? These are all chemical changes!

  8. Clues of a Chemical Change • It is often difficult to tell if the chemical makeup of a material has actually changed! • Here are some clues to let you know if a chemical change has occurred: • A gas is produced in the form of bubbles or smoke • The color has changed • A precipitate (solid) has formed
