  1. THE PRE-GAMECONFERENCE MDP Peter McDonald

  2. THE PRE-GAME CONFERENCE TWO TYPES OF PRE-GAMES • Mini Pre-Game: 10 Minutes • Extensive Pre-Game: 30 – 45 Minute

  3. MINI PRE-GAME CONFERENCE -10 MINUTES- • Review rule changes and interpretations • Jump ball • Out of bounds • Foul situations • Basket interference • Goaltending • Substitutions

  4. MINI PRE-GAME CONFERENCECONTINUED • Switching • Double Whistles • Last second shots • Cover pressing defense tactics • Know pre-game ceremony - inform coaches • Instructions to scorers and timers • Review signals and mechanics with all bench officials

  5. EXTENSIVE PRE-GAME30-45 MINUTES

  6. RULES DIFFERENCES WE ARE USING FOR THIS GAME • CIS • FIBA • HIGH SCHOOL

  7. GAME PHILOSOPHY THE THREE KEYS • Stay in your primary (eye contact – know when you are “on-ball” and “off ball“) • Call the Obvious –Trust Your Partners • Referee the defense

  8. ROUGH PLAY • Make post play our top priority, since that’s where rough play starts • Let’s not allow a defender to use a forearm on a player with the ball • Let’s not allow a defender to use a leg or knee to move a player from the block • Protect the dribbler (Call the hand checking early) • Protect the shooter. Do not leave too soon DO NOT LET PLAYERS REDIRECT IMPEDE DISPLACE DISLODGE

  9. GAME MANAGEMENT • Player on player taunting • Coach/Bench Personnel – Handling coaches if they get out of hand take care of business Helping Co-Officials • Awarding time outs – Lets let partners know if it is a 30 or 60 • Help with player numbers – foul shooter • Substitutes – Official closest to table bring players in – pass off to opposite (If not handling ball) Note: Players can sub during all free throws

  10. DIFFERENCES FEDERATION / COLLEGE RULES 1. Player control 2. Stop clock last minute second half or overtime. 3. Free throw lane...4 defense and two offence 4. No one on 4th block 5. Closely guarded count on held ball not dribble 6. Double Fouls-Team in Possession

  11. SHOT CLOCK • Remind each other when it gets below 15 seconds on inbounds • Beware and watch for inadvertent resets • Check shot clock before calling 10 second backcourt violation • Official administering throw-in responsible for proper setting-resetting clock

  12. PROTECTING THE SHOOTER -3 POINT SHOT -LAST SECOND SHOT- • Shot in your primary – Stay with the shooter • If three point shot - Primary official indicates • Avoid indicating if not in your primary • “T” AND “C” Mirror • Last second shot – Unless given up and communicated – Primary is responsible

  13. FLOOR COVERAGE DIVISION OF THE COURT • Primary Areas of responsibility • Dual coverage THE IMPORTANCE OF THE “C” • Over the back • Don’t force the Lead to call across the paint • On rotations stay and officiate to allow the Trail the opportunity to become the new “C” • It is okay to have 2 “C” but we never want 2 Trails

  14. SETTING THE TONE EARLY • Rough Play • Referee the Post • Hand Checking • Off Ball Contact / Screens • Dislodging Cutters • Pushing through legal screens

  15. TECHNICAL FOULS • Review penalties for different types of technical fouls • Let’s have the non-calling officials meet at centre and discuss how the technical will be administered • Who is going to administer? • Do those circumstances ever change?

  16. ROTATIONS • Lead initiates • In rotation as “L” go with purpose. • Let’s try not to have a rotation late in the play or on a drive to the basket • “C” can initiate rotation in the case of a half court trap and “C” needs better angle on play • NOTE: HOW WE WANT TO HANDLE MISSED ROTATIONS WHEN WE ARE IN TRANSITION

  17. SIDELINE AND ENDLINE OUT OF BOUNDS CALLS • Asking for help look at official • Avoid double whistles on “C” or “T” sideline or “C” or “T” on “L” end line Changing the call outside of your primary, sideline or end line • 110% certain • Strong whistle • Move to Confer • Allow Primary official to make the change

  18. END OF GAME CONCENTRATION LET’S USE THE END OF GAME TIMEOUTS TO EFFECTIVELY COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER Let’s Go Over • 1. Foul Counts • 2. Time Outs Left • 3. Possession Arrow • 4. Possible Scenarios • 5. Stop clock on baskets made under 59.9 seconds.

  19. HALFTIME“WE COME TOGETHER, WE LEAVE TOGETHER” • If coach approaches us at half time, ask him to talk to his team first, address him when he comes back • Check A/P before leaving the floor • Discuss concerns or problems ADJUSTMENTS IF NECESSARY • Court coverage • Philosophy: Are the points of emphasis under control • Remind each other of the things done well in the first half • Return to the floor • Watch players • Just before throw-in, check with table personnel for questions/concerns

  20. POST GAME • Make eye contact with the official scorer and confirm that the game is over. (Thumbs up signal) • Leave The Floor As A Team Review Game • Points Of Emphasis • Tempo • Bench Decorum • Strange Play Rulings • Solicit Constructive Feedback – ”What could we have done better”

  21. WE ARE A TEAM Let’s hustle the entire night, no matter what the score. Let’s give 100% the players deserve it!!!
