  2. What is impromptu speaking? • Having to speak with little or no preparation time. • Asking to say “just a few words” at a meeting or event • Being called on unexpectedly in class to present

  3. Benefits of Practicing Impromptu Speaking • Gets you prepared for moments in life when you are called on to speak impromptu • Helps you learn to “think on your feet” • Improves your overall speaking skills—remember “practice makes perfect”

  4. How to give an impromptu speech • An impromptu speech needs 3 main parts: • An introduction • Make sure to start with an attention getter • State your quote and tell if you agree or disagree with it • A body • Focus on 2-3 main points • Elaborate on those points • A conclusion • Review your main points • Final memorable statement

  5. Tips • Speak from associations: • What comes to mind when you first think of your topic? • A personal experience? • Something you heard or you read about the topic? • Use current events, popular music, TV shows or movies

  6. A Few More Tips • Don’t apologize! • Tell an anecdote that is relevant to the topic. • Don’t ramble • Make sure you think about your conclusion when organizing your speech • Stick to your plan • When you get to your conclusion STOP!

  7. The Assignment • Over the next 4 days, you will complete 2 impromptu speeches varying in length • One speech will be 1-2 minutes • One speech will be 2-3 minutes • Both speeches will be evaluated, but your final grade will be an average of your 2 speeches. • Speeches will be evaluated on organization, vocal quality, eye contact, and gestures
