Projection & warning: Alarming decline in annual water availability in most parts of Gujarat to 400 m3/ capita for 2020. (Water level to minimum for scares condition is 2000 m3/capita/year) Flood in Tapti around Surat spill on banks of river Tapti flooding sq.kms even with releases of 2 - 3 lakhs, can be harvested to by recharging aquifers.

SEARCH OF NEW SOURCE FOR URBAN WATER SHORTAGE, 27/03/2009 • Facts & Data available: Ukai will have less inflow in next decade Tapti Basin: Total Ground Water Recharge Potential: 633.83 MCM / year Usable Ground Water Recharge: 507.10 MCM / year Usable Ground Water Recharge Withdrawal: 168.65 MCM / year Balance of Ground Water: 338.45 MCM / year (Source: G.W.S.S.B., Gandhinagar)

SEARCH OF NEW SOURCE FOR URBAN WATER SHORTAGE, 27/03/2009 Saline Land Growth: 1 lakh hectare / year (Source: Bureau of Soil Survey & Use) 1960 - 6.2 % Kharland, 1989 - 15.8 % Present - 27.17 % Salinity within 2 km belt on coastline: 3500 ppm (not suitable for irrigation & other uses) Surat District’s saline water area: Bardoli, Choryasi, Kamrej, Mahuva, Olpad, Palsana, Valod, Vyara Saurastra: Year 1957 to 2000 average annual rainfall: 250 – 380 mm Year 2001 rainfall: 455 mm

SEARCH OF NEW SOURCE FOR URBAN WATER SHORTAGE, 27/03/2009 • Conservation of Resources for Survival: • Source: • Only flood water for South Gujarat & Narmada Canal for Central Gujarat • Conservation of Flood: • No storm drains for discharge to saline water i.e. river Tapti, Kim, Mindhola in lower reaches • Network to intercept storm to pond (Flood Detention Reservoir) on Kahrland on coast (Combined coastal protection / highway) • Recharge by bores in R.L. (-) 3 to (-) 15 m by wells / bores seepage to river ponds & weir storage.
