1. Director: Ridley Scott • Born in Northumberland, England • Scott was educated at the West Hartlepool College of Art and London's Royal College of Art. • He was a set designer for BBC. • He established Ridley Scott Associates. • He had success with 1979's Alien. • Blade Runner was recognized as sci fi masterpiece. • Thelma & Louise was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Director for Scott. He then had a few flops but bounced back. • Gladiator earned five Oscars, including Best Picture • Sir Ridley was knighted in 2003 for his "substantial contribution to the British film industry". • He is usually considered the "father" of the director's cut. Scott was one of the first to use the description for the 1992 re-release of Blade Runner. • His striking visual style and atmospheric lighting was influential on an entire subsequent generation of filmmakers. 2. Blade Runner (June 25,1982) Scene Description:Deckard is hanging on the edge of a building, after a failed jump to escape Batty. Batty the replicant shows mercy. As the scene progresses we are unsure how it will end, the mood is gloomy and the ending is ironic. Blade Runner Movie Clip What to look for: • Ridley Scott uses Angle reverse angle between Rick Deckard and Ray Batty in this dramatic scene in the rain so we can see both of there expressions. • There is a Detail shot on Batty’s face to show the emotion and features on his face. • There is light blue and green lighting shot over the scene. This displays the dramatic emotion. • The rain is used to once again create a dramatic effect. • The music played is quiet and peace full showing you that Batty is more than just an android but he has revealed the human emotion of mercy. • The pull back shot shows Roy Batty and how his time is up as a replicant, he dies and the dove signifies life after his death.

3. Gladiator (May 5, 2000) Scene Description:Maximus has just fought Commodus in the coliseum. This was Maximus last battle. He freed himself and his friends. Maximus has accomplished his goal to bring Rome back to its original Justice. He leaves and goes on to see his family in the after life he is at rest after a hard fought journey. The spectators respect Maximus and end the scene with a feeling of respect and justice as they carry his body away. Gladiator Movie Clip What to look for: • They use a detail shot on Maximus face this showing his desire to fulfill Rome to its original dignity. • The Peaceful music draws the observer to realize that Maximus is now free and can once again be reunited with his family. • There is a flash forward showing Maximus entering his after life as the scene cross cuts from reality back to afterlife. • There is a tint of light, blue and grey lighting to display the afterlife Maximus is entering. • Angle reverse angle is then used to show the descriptions on both Lucilla and Maximus face. • Then once Maximus is in the afterlife there is a pull back shot to show his son running to see his father from a distance. • There is a birds eye view used to shoot a crowd shot, the spectators are showing their respect toward Maximus.

4. Black Hawk Down (January 18, 2002) Scene Description: The Soldiers are returning to base after much firefight they are running behind to provide coverage from the oncoming Somalian rebels. They are all exhausted and crowds of Somalia civilians welcome them. Black Hawk Down Movie Clip (2.06.42 – 2.08.18) What to look for: • There is a close up Shot of the soldiers running. • This running shot is shot at a mid angle to show the exhausted legs and you can hear their tired breaths of the soldiers. • Ridley Uses Slow Motion and emphasizes the sound of the bullet as it hits the ground. • The wind is also loud; the peaceful music plays behind the mayhem and it reveals the soldiers despair and fatigue. • There is a pull back shot to a large group of oncoming Somalian rebels that are left behind them. This shows distance in the crowd shot. • The smoke and soft blue lighting reveal the emotion that lay within the solders. • Ridley fades in and out with smoke, he also uses it as a soft focus on the soldiers. • Then Ridley uses angle reverse angle to display the kids running up to join them.

5. Movie Connections • Ridley Scott begins most films with an info card sequence/montage. (Blade Runner, Gladiator, and Black Hawk Down) • Has Stunning visuals Scott personally sketches most of his own storyboards, left-handed, with great artistic style. • Extensive use of smoke As in Blade runner and Black Hawk Down. • Sweeping landscapes/backdrops - at times, with close-up of a character's face in foreground - as shown in Gladiator (2000) • Often utilizes a light blue tint that contrasts black silhouettes, e.g. Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, and Blade Runner. • In some of his movies there is a strong conflict between father and son that usually ends with the latter killing the former intentionally (Blade Runner, Gladiator) or accidentally (Black Hawk Down) • There is Strong female characters as in some speculate that his being raised by a single parent, his mother, could be the cause. This includes Sigourney Weaver in Alien (1979), Geena Davis & Susan Sarandon in Thelma & Louise (1991), and Meredith Vickers from Prometheus (2012) • Scott Often makes notable use of classical music with consistency in his choice of composers, using Vangelis (Blade Runner) or Hans Zimmer ( Thelma & Louise, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down). • Likes to work with actors who have a strong theatre background and/or drama school graduates.
