Points A A point is an exact location in space. It has no length or width. A point is usually named with a capital letter. Draw some points on this coordinate grid and label them correctly.
Lines T R A line is a collection of points going on and on infinitely in both directions. It has no endpoints. The line can be named with a single, lower-case letter. Arrowheads must be drawn to show that the line goes on in both directions infinitely. For example, this line could be named: The line could be named: TR a z or The line can also be named by a line segment on the line. Click on line above to reveal a line segment on the line. We'll learn more about line segments on the next page! Practice drawing and labeling lines:
Lines Segments & Rays Lines can be divided into parts to make segments & rays. A B C D A line segment is a part of a line. It has two endpoints and includes all the points between those endpoints. To name a line segment, name the endpoints. Click on the line above to reveal line segment AB. A ray is a part of a line. It has one endpoint and continues on and on in one direction. A ray is named by its endpoint and one other point on the line. Click on the right arrow on the line above to reveal ray CD. Use the line below to practice drawing line segments & rays:
Angles Two rays that have the same endpoint form an angle. This endpoint is called the vertex. The Angle can be named in one of three ways: 1 - A small angle & its vertex -(a capital letter - do you remember why?) 2 - A small angle & three letters in this order: -an endpoint on one ray, the vertex, and an endpoint on the other ray 3 - A number written inside the rays of the angle Practice drawing and labeling Angles:
Highlight the examples of points, lines, line segments, rays, and angles. Label them with a P, L, LS, R, or A.
Different TYPES of Angles An acute angle is less than a right angle. The measurement of its angle is less than 90 An obtuse angle is greater than a right angle. The measurement of its angle is more than 90 A right angle forms a square corner. The measurement of its angle is exactly 90 A straight angle forms a straight line. The measurement of its angle is 180 Practice Drawing different types of angles:
Pairs of line are given special names based on their relationship to each other Intersecting Lines cross through each other at one point Click to watch a clip Parallel Lines never intersect (cross each other) Click to watch a clip Perpendicular Lines are intersecting lines that cross through each at one point **The lines form right angles** Click to watch a clip
Practice making Parallel, Intersecting, and Perpendicular Lines: Pull the lines & labels to practice: Parallel Intersecting Perpendicular
SHAPES You can see line relationships in For example: These two lines are INTERSECTING. Click on the corner to see! These two lines are PERPENDICULAR Click on the vertical line to see! These two lines are PARALLEL. Click on the top line to see! These two lines are PERPENDICULAR. Click on the corner to see!
