  1. COMPLEX MECHANICAL FUNCTION The role played by a set of components in transferringmotion inside a technical object.

  2. Complex Mechanical Functions Motion Transmission Motion Transformation

  3. DEFINITIONS: System: is a set of components that share the same function. Motion transmission:relays motion from one component to another without modifying the motion. Motion transformation: transforms the type of motion as it is relayed from one component to another.

  4. All systems contain • A driver • (At least) 1 Driven Component • (Possibly) 1 or more Intermediates Refer to page 390 in textbook

  5. Components • DRIVER:Receives the power required to set the system in motion. • DRIVEN:Receives the motion of the driver and transmits it to another part. • INTERMEDIATE: Located between the driver and the driven. May or may not be present in a system.

  6. Driver Component Driven Component Intermediate Component

  7. Motion Transmission The driver and the driven perform the same motion 5 types: • Friction gear system • Simple gear system • Pulley & belt system • Chain & sprocket system • Worm & worm gear system

  8. Friction Gear System Transmits rotational motion between two or more nearby parts. COMPONENTS & OPERATION: Has two or more wheels without teeth that roll together.

  9. Simple Gear System http://www.technologystudent.com/gears1/gears1.htm Transmits rotational motion between two or more nearby parts. COMPONENTS & OPERATION: Has two or more gearsthat come in contact and mesh together.

  10. Belt and Pulley Transmits rotational motion between parts that are relatively far apart from each other. COMPONENTS & OPERATION: A belt slide is on two or more wheels (pulleys). The pulleys must have a smooth surface for the belt not to break. http://www.technologystudent.com/gears1/pulley1.htm

  11. Chain & Sprocket Transmits rotational motion between parts that are relatively far apart from each other. COMPONENTS & OPERATION: Has two (or more) sprockets (gear wheels) that do not touch, plus a chain. http://www.technologystudent.com/gears1/chain1.htm

  12. Worm & Worm Gear http://www.technologystudent.com/gears1/worm1.htm Transmits rotational motion to non-parallel parts that are close to one another. The worm is the driver. The opposite will not work. Worm COMPONENTS & OPERATION: Has a worm and a worm gear; the teeth of each component slide into each other. Worm gear

  13. Motion Transformation

  14. Motion Transformation: The driver and driven component do NOT have the same motion • We’ll be looking at 4 system types: • Slider-crank • Rack & pinion • Cam followers • Screw gear p.397-398

  15. Slider-Crank • FUNCTION: • Rotational  Translation • (or vice versa) • COMPONENTS: • Has a connecting rod and a crank. • The rod is the INTERMEDIATE. piston Connecting rod Crank http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T831-i3ShX8

  16. Rack & Pinion • FUNCTION: • Rotational  Translation • (or vice versa) • COMPONENTS & OPERATION: • Has a rack (rod with teeth) and a pinion (gear wheel). The teeth of the components mesh.

  17. CAM & Follower • FUNCTION: • Rotational motion Translation motion. • COMPONENTS & OPERATION: • Has a cam (irregular shaped disc) and a follower (the rod).

  18. Screw Gear • FUNCTION: • Rotational motion Translation motion.(or vice versa) • COMPONENTS & OPERATION: • At least one screw and one nut.

  19. Speed changes- Friction gears & Belt and pulley Slower Slower Faster medium Faster medium Smaller diameter = faster speed Larger diameter = slower speed

  20. Speed changes- Gears and Chain and sprocket Faster Slower Slower medium medium Faster Fewer Teeth = faster speed More Teeth = slower speed

  21. Speed changes- Worm and worm wear Allows for a large reduction in speed. 1 full revolution of worm = movement by 1 tooth in gear
