  12. How has teaching changed? As we know, many children are not playing outside for hours on end the way ‘we used to’. The main challenge with this truth is that professionals are finding more children with underdeveloped vestibular systems. “When our vestibular sense is fully functioning, we are secure and organized enough in our bodies to be able to attend and respond to all of the other senses we encounter daily.  A child with a well-developed vestibular sense feels confident and safe during movement activities, even if his feet are off the ground…He is comfortable with climbing, swinging, somersaulting, and jumping – knowing that his body will adapt and that he will be able to maintain his balance and keep himself from falling or getting hurt.” https://theinspiredtreehouse.com/vestibular/

  13. What does it do? Vestibular input gives our bodies information about whether we are moving with or against gravity, fast or slow, moving or still, and what direction we're headed. From infancy through adulthood, vestibular information contributes to the development of: • muscle tone • righting reactions • balance • postural security • eye movements • overall alertness https://harkla.co/blogs/special-needs/vestibular-input

  14. So what? Is this a big deal? A child with an underdeveloped vestibular system might show signs like… • She may move constantly in order to feel satisfied • He may be fearful or movement or feel unbalanced or physically insecure • She may be clumsy or ‘a crasher’ (proprioception) • He may have a very difficult time standing or sitting in an upright manner • She may appear floppy • He may extreme trouble with motor planning or even speech planning • She may have trouble with focus or tracking
