  3. The Election of 1808 • The Democratic Republican candidate, James Madison is elected to office in 1808. • Federalist nominate Charles Pickney • Madison won 122 votes to Pickney’s 47!

  4. Troubles and Tensions at Home British impressments of U.S. sailors and newly formed British alliance with the Natives, cause many Americans to want to take an aggressive stance against the British.

  5. Republicans who favor war with the British were known as the War Hawks. Wanted to avenge the British actions against the Americans, but also wanted to expand the nation’s power.
