  2. Objective • I will be able to describe the changes in Medieval Europe. Language Objective: • I will use a sentence frame to describe the changes in Medieval Europe.

  3. Beginning of the Middle Ages • Fall of Rome – begins in 410 A.D. with the sack of Rome by the Goths • Goths – tribes of barbarians who are pushed by the Huns out of their territory, so they attack Roman territory.

  4. Power Shifts • Power was in the hands of the few during the Roman period. • Roman Emperor and his advisors; • Generalssuch as Julius Cesar and Hadrian • Power shifts frequently from kings with small land holdings to kings who hold larger kingdoms. • Charlemagne united much of Europe, then it fell apart after he died.

  5. End of the Middle Ages • Black Death – the Plague • Begins in 1397 • As much as 40% of the population dies. • Serfs gain power; their labor becomes more valuable. • Reconquista - Muslims are kicked out of Spain • Rise to power of Spain and England • Discovery of the “New World”

Reconquista • Muslims conquer Spain in 711 A.D. • Christians begin to reconquer Spain in 718. • The last Muslims are pushed out in 1492. • King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella conquered Grenada. • Muslims must either leave or convert to Catholicism. • Leads to the Inquisition in Spain. • Map of Spain

  7. Inquisition • Beginning around 1100 A.D. in France, if you didn’t follow the rules of the Roman Catholic Church, you could be punished. • Not going to church? Refuse to say you’re a Catholic? • Burned at the stake. • If you relented (said you were Catholic) right before they set you on fire, they would garrote (strangle) you first. • The Spanish Inquisition was particularly cruel.

Breakup of Catholicism • People don’t like the rules and double standards of Catholicism. • Martin Luther posts 95 Thesis on a church door. • States what is wrong with the Catholic Church. • Is excommunicated (kicked out of the church) • Rulers discover they can control power that once belonged to the church. • Catholics kill Protestants. • Protestants kill Catholics • And so on….
