Research Activities Our field of research is the Planty Ecology, with particular reference to the environmental predictivity of spatial and temporal pattern of plant communities and their inferences for landscape analysis and management. At present we are chiefly interested in the following research themes: 1) Ecology of the altitudinal limit of timberline in the Northern Apennines 2) Spatial and temporal patterns of vegetation in cultural landscapes • 3) Taxonomic plant diversity in plant communities and its relationship with human impacts.

Global Change) Activity 6.2 Sustainable Management of Resources Area 6.2.1.4 Biodiversity Role of proponent: partner Materials and methods The study sites will be chosen within protected areas. The results can put into a Geographical Information System (GIS) to create an archive which includes data with very different origins, scales and purposes. Vegetation samplings will be made to describe the present species composition of different forest vegetation types, and correlated with the site history as described by the available historical data.

  5. Expected results • The research goal is to understand what kind of evolution could be prospected and what sort of management can be proposed for southern European woods in the present to preserve their value in the future. • The expected results • 1) will clarify the value for plant diversity conservation of different forest managements and landscape changes in a southern European context • 2) A GIS-based model will provide a standardised procedure for the description and analysis of forest change applicable to any site. In addition, it will provide a hypothesis for temporal modelling which can be used to draw short-medium term inferences.
