Frameworks for University Cooperation in the Baltic Sea Region Turku, October 28, 2013 The Realities and Challenges for a EuroFaculty Project Antti Paasio EFP Project Leader Professor of Entrepreneurship and Business Director of Business and Innovation Development University of Turku

Major changes • THE WHAT: A strong movement towards WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER • ONE DIRECTION >> INTERACTION >> NETWORKING >> POST-EFP SUSTAINABILITY • STRONGER EMPHASIS ON LEARNING
EXPANDING NETWORK PSKOV (RECIPIENT) LEARNING PORTS! TURKU (LEAD) 1ST & 2ND PHASE DONOR 2ND PHASE DONOR
EFP Observations • Cross-border activities increasing • Students as strong drivers • Societal impact finally active: innovation • Joint programs strengthen sustainability • Long distance between ”previous/local” and ”tomorrow/international” already covered
EFP Challenges today • Synchronization of co-financing • Uneven terms of CBSS funding • Synchronization of EFP with other developments in Pskov • Capacity development of faculty • Low local visibility of EFP, better synch with other events needed • Great differences between regions
EuroFaculty Pskov by 2015 • Master Program Baltic Sea Region Business (first launched by PskovSU and University of Latvia) • Solid Bologna type Bachelor Program in Business Studies • International executive Management Development Program for Baltic Sea Region Business • Innovation embedded in education, research and the region • Joint student-driven innovation activity • Better ICT infrastucture and faculty development • Focus on 2020 rather than just 2015
Drivers for Re-Thinking EF”25 years after” • Universities are increasingly developing their activities through intensive international networking and interaction • Digital communication has revolutionized joint operations in development, research, education, and ... • Increased competition between universities requires more effective incentives for partner universities • Without ”we all benefit”, sustainability is lost • We now know much more about efficient international cooperation
EF 2015 ONWARDS • The principle of ”one recipient, many donors” is outdated. All participants must be prosumers • Degree education should be jointly planned and jointly executed • A EF virtual learning platform must be developed • Joint benchmark-type research should also be carried out (Observatory for BSR Development, Impact of EF, ...) • An annual high status event based on OBSRD development focus should be developed (alumni development) • EF should be predominantly Cross-Border • BSR joint activity ”Students for Innovation and Entrepreneurship” should be supported • Links with academic networks (BSRUN, ECSB ETC.) should be intensified • Much more mobility of faculty and students • Joint operations with similar regions should be considered
Can EuroFaculty Have a Future? Yes, it must!
