  2. 5th Grade Ideology It is our belief that we are not only to teach, extend, and review the curriculum, but to prepare our children to be successful 6th grade students and citizens!

  3. Daily Schedule 8:45-9:05 Morning Work/Silent Reading 9:05-9:10 WPAW News 9:10-10:55 Language Arts 10:55-11:40 Specials 11:40-12:55 Math 12:55-2:00 Lunch/Recess 2:00-2:20 BEAR/Agendas 2:20-3:05 Science/S.S. 3:05-3:35 Team Time

  4. Curriculum • Reading: poetry, non-fiction, fiction, and drama Focus on before, during, and after strategies • Writing: grammar, punctuation, spelling of all genres Focus on organization, elaboration, & focus • Science: Ecosystems, weather, landforms, and Motion and Design • Social Studies: US, Canada, and Middle America Focus on economics, government, movement, and history

  5. Math is… • Focused on skill lessons and problem solving • Thought provoking and discussion based • Comprised of computation review opportunities (homework) Math is not: easy anymore- there are different ways to solve basic problems

  6. Resources Used: • Math Expressions, NCDPI Math Strategies, Wake County skill lessons, centers, games • Reading Houghton Mifflin, leveled readers, novels, Wake County skill lessons, RRJ’s

  7. RRJ’s • Major source of Reading evaluation • Notebook that serves as a method of communication between teacher and student regarding what is being read and comprehended • Powerful tool to assess student strengths and weaknesses • Amazing level 4 opportunity

  8. Science and Social Studies • Science Major assessment tool is Science Notebooks through experimentation and inquiry • Social Studies Discussion, debate, and activity focused

  9. Academic Expectations • Projects and class work • Homework • Formal and informal assessments • Grading Level 4 vs level 3: is the difference between consistently abstract and/or insightful interaction and correct and specific answering. Level 3 *Will be seen on Report Cards for those who are regularly balancing between a level 3 & 4.

  10. Standard Based Grading • Level 1: The student does not show an understanding of the material. They struggle performing tasks with help. • Level 2: The student can perform task with help and occasionally on their own. • Level 3: The student consistently performs tasks without assistance. • Level 4: The student CONSISTENTLY makes connections between the concept and the outside world. The student consistently adds insight and depth to the answers in all subject areas.

  11. Behavioral Plan • Steps of intervention 1. Warning 2. Discussion of strategies, Silent lunch, behavior journal, modified recess 3. Phone call, conferences 4. Office referrals

  12. My Job/Your Job • We established the roles of the teacher and the student during the first week of school. This will be seen in the Tuesday Folder.

  13. 5th Grade Field Trips • Washington D.C.: May 13-14, 2010 *** Need to register to have level 4 clearance for the D.C. trip. • Durham Museum of Life and Science: September 25, 2009 • Marbles Kid Museum: Nov 20, 2009

  14. Collections • Planners will cost $4 • Will be ordering TFK and Science related materials, cost TBA • Anything $10 and over, look for a receipt to come home the same day.
