Warm Up: Review HW Readings with your Partner • Discuss your answers to 1 & 2 of article 1? • Does the author of article 1, think that fighting in WWII was just? • In article 2, discuss why you think the author chose to describe the interaction between Billy & the doctor. Write down your ideas on your handout.

  3. Just War • Post It #1: What have we seen in video clips and movies so far that makes you question whether war is worth fighting? Explain in 1-2 sentences • Post It #2: Find a quote from the text you read for homework that shows either authors view on war. Write it on a post it

  4. Presentations: Axis Terrors • Stalin’s Great Terror • Kristallnact • Auschwitz • Battle of Stalingrad • Nanking Massacre

  5. Why We Fight? • The Holocaust: Mass murder of Jews by Nazi’s during WWII • Genocide: Mass murder of a specific group of people • War Crimes: acts that violate normal customs and rules of war, usually extreme torture and killing of civilians or prisoners of war

Why We Fight? • What have we seen so far that convinces us that fighting this war was worth it? • By the end of today you will answer this question • Given what you have learned so far, would you be willing to go fight in the war? • Do you feel that it would be worth giving your life to fight against the enemy we were facing, even if it meant injury, mental damage or death?

  7. Stalin & Soviet Russia • At least 6 Million people were deliberately murdered by Stalin between 1931-1945 • None of these were killed in battles of WWII • 3 Million from Ukraine were starved to death

  8. Hitler & Holocaust • About 12 million people were systematically murdered by the Nazis from 1939-1945 • 5.6 million Jews • 6 Million other groups: Polish, Gypsies, Physically and Mentally Disabled

  9. Japanese & Nanking • 300,000 people were killed in 1 city (Nanking) by the Japanese during 1937 • None of these were deaths in battle • At least 20,000 Women were raped by Japanese soldiers

  10. Text Study (4 groups of Primary Sources) • Group 1: 2x The Rape of Nanking • Group 2: 2x Eastern Europe Hitler to Stalin In your notes: • Title of your source • Primary or Secondary Source • Summary statement for each paragraph • Main Idea for the text • Underline 2-3 quotes that stand out • At least 1 questions this text makes you want to ask

  11. What did we know? • The US Government has reports of what was going on in Germany • Some newspapers printed stories of what Hilter was doing and of the Rape of Nanking • Most of the population has no idea of the scale and the details of the the killing that was happening

  12. Exit /Homework Reflection • Given what you have learned so far, would you be willing to go fight in the war? • Do you feel that it would be worth giving your life to fight against the enemy we were facing, even if it meant injury, mental damage or death?
