Notice how the duration of the clip is grayed out, or filled in. When the duration of the clip is grayed out, or filled in, this indicates an OVERWRITE edit. The clip will be added to the time line on top of where ever you drag it. It will NOT effect other clips. There will also be a DOWN arrow. • Timeline: An important note • DRAGGING!
Notice how the duration of the clip is outlined, or hollowed. When the duration of the clip is outlined, or hollowed out, this indicates an INSERT edit. The clip will be added to the timeline and push other clips back to make room for it. There will also be an arrow pointing RIGHT. • Timeline: An important note • DRAGGING!
Insert/overwrite line With your clip and selection arrow above the line, you will make an INSERT edit. When it is placed below, you will make an OVERWRITE edit. Most edits are overwrite edits. • Timeline: An important note • DRAGGING!

Text is never over black. It just looks that way because there is nothing behind it. That’s why when you move text over a clip, you can see both. And when you leave it in the timeline over nothing, you see black.
