  1. Friction NotesApril 9th, 2012

  2. Friction • Force that Opposes Motion • Every Object is “ROUGH” • A Series of Hills and Valleys

  3. Magnified Objects Staple Through Paper Hypodermic Needle Snowflakes Toilet Paper Velcro Razor Blade Dentist Drill

  4. Types of Friction • Two Types • Kinetic (Dynamic)…Motion • Static…No Motion

  5. Kinetic (Dynamic) Friction • Friction of Moving Objects • Sliding • Writing with a Pencil • Scratching • Sledding • Rubbing Your Hands Together • Rolling • Skateboarding • Pushing a Grocery Cart

  6. Static Friction • Friction of Objects at Rest • Push on a Table and it Doesn’t Move • This Friction is Higher than Kinetic Friction

  7. Factors Affecting Friction • Roughness • The rougher the surfaces, the more friction between them Low Friction High Friction

  8. Force More Downward Force Means More Friction Between Objects Less Downward Force Means Less Friction Between Objects! Same Objects

  9. Surface Area • Changing HOW MUCH of the surfaces come in contact with each other DOES NOT CHANGE THE AMOUNT OF FRICTION! Same Amount of Friction! This Science is BANANAS. B.A.N.A.N.A.S!

  10. When is Friction Harmful? • Engine • Moving Parts Cause High Heat • Holes in Socks • Erosion of Topsoil • Other Examples??

  11. To Reduce Friction • Lubricants • Grease • Oils • Ball Bearings • Changes Sliding Friction into Rolling Friction • Sanding • Makes the Surfaces Less Jagged • Other Examples?

  12. When is Friction Helpful? • Brakes • Walking • Wheels on Things • Writing • Eating • Living • Other Examples?

  13. To Increase Friction • Sand on Icy Roads • Use Rougher Sandpaper • Other Examples?
