Part 2 Fractions
3 types of fractions • Simple: value less than 1 • Mixed: whole number and simple fraction. Value is greater than 1 • Improper: Numerator is greater than the denominator. No whole numbers. Value greater than 1.
Make EQUIVALENT Fractions!!!
To add or subtract unlike fractions, first rewrite them as equivalent fractions with a common denominator. Remember! Fractions that represent the same value are equivalent.
How do we do this? • You can use any common denominator. But it will be easier to find the least common denominator to add and subtract unlike fractions. • The least common denominator (LCD) is the least common multiple of the denominators.
Time to + and -!!! Steps for unlike denominators • Find the LCD for the two denominators by looking for LCM • Make equivalent fractions by multiplying both the numerator and denominator by the same number (to get LCD) • Add the numerators, leave your denominator • If needed, simplify
