Mental Health and Schools Together-NH • Fall 2006 MAST-NH grant awarded to NH CEBIS from US DOE Safe and Drug Free Schools • Extends PBIS-NH school-based intensive services beyond school to community and interagency with emphasis on linkages to community mental health centers • Primary Prevention (MH Primer), Secondary Prevention (SSBD and Function-Based Support) and Tertiary Services and Supports (Resource Mapping, Life Space Crisis Intervention, Wraparound Training and Support) • Development or expansion of Regional Collaboratives

MAST-NH Outcomes An increase in the number of school and mental health partners who have knowledge and skills in (1) the characteristics of mental illnesses and their effect on learning, (2) early detection and systematic screening procedures to identify students at risk for developing mental health problems, (3) procedures for making appropriate referrals to in-school supports (targeted and intensive support systems) and to community mental health agencies and wraparound facilitators (4) the availability of local mental health supports and what should be expected from referral to those supports

(5) crisis intervention techniques for de-escalating student behavior and procedures for accessing immediate mental health services when necessary (6) engaging families using person-centered planning and wraparound facilitation as a tool for implementing SOC, and (7) use of resource mapping strategies

MAST-NH Outcomes: Collaboratives • MAST-NH will support the development or expansion of five regional interagency collaboratives that (1) use data-based decision making to strategically identify regional needs and assets in order to create a plan for addressing gaps and alignment of supports and services in a coordinated and integrated fashion (2) create specific protocols aimed at clarifying and communicating procedures and information between schools and mental health care providers (3) help schools, families and individual student wraparound teams address systemic barriers to accessing quality mental health care and (4) help evaluate the effectiveness of training, technical assistance and support on child and family outcomes.

MAST-NH Activities Associated with Community Resource Mapping • Training will be provided for a cohort of 16 experienced NH System of Care and Education personnel and will include initial training in CRM followed by a mentored practice phase; followed by ongoing technical assistance. • The 16 trained Resource Mapping facilitators will provide CRM facilitation in eight participating New Hampshire communities, providing such support by the end of the 18 month grant period. • A comprehensive and strategically gathered assessment of need to be procured through data collection from MH agencies, schools, family support networks and other key stakeholders.

  16. MAST-NH Activities Associated with Community Resource Mapping • A comprehensive assessment of existing assets and resources pertaining to the critical areas of need are revealed through the needs assessment. • An analysis of how needs compare with existing resources and a clear and collaborative action plan, engaging membership from the regional network of supports, to bridge existing gaps and align/coordinate supports. • An action plan to include effective communication of maps of existing resources to the regional network of professional and lay individuals and organizations that support families in need of intensive supports.

Today’s Outcomes By end of today, participants will: • Be able to describe CRM -- the outcomes, the process, and approximate timeline • Have knowledge of the essential members of the core data gathering team (Collaborative or Sub-Group of Collaborative) • Be able to explain how CRM will inform the work of the Community /Regional Collaborative • Understand the purpose and use of key CRM data collection tools • Know how to facilitate the process of developing a data collection plan • Understand the commitments entailed in the role of a Facilitator of CRM process through MAST-NH
