Hydrogeologic Discussion of Southwest and Central Florida and Tie-In to the South Florida Area Lester J. Williams 4/21/2011
Outline • Approach used for revising framework in central and southwest areas • Discussion of the preliminary mapping • Problem areas and things we need to discuss Finchs Cave, Marion Co. FL (A.M. Cressler)
Approach • ROMP and deep exploratory well reports • Geophysical logs • Aquifers • Confining units • Transmissive zones • Aquifer Tests • Head Gradients • Cross Sections!!!
Why Cross Sections? • Main reason is to enable us to build a 3D framework • Continuity of confining beds and permeability variations can be better understood • Very thick system with many different permeable zones and confining beds
Preliminary Findings • Low-porosity beds comprising MCU I can be correlated into the eastern an southern part of SWFWMD; these include an upper thinner discontinuous zone and a lower thicker more continuous zone (informally designated as “MCU IA” and “MCU IB”) • MCU II is overlapped by MCU I along the eastern border and in the south areas of SWFWMD • MCU II consists of a very distinctive low porosity unit on geophysical logs, but is closely related and often confused with underlying MCU VI • Deeper MCUs also remapped and revised in area • Avon Park permeable zone forms on top of one or more of the following MCUs: MCU IA, MCU IB, MCU II
Basis for all my interpretations next slide
Reported “fractured zone” Duncan and others zones Pre-existing top markers Low-porosity unit interpreted from geophysical logs Water quality change
Marked up log • Interpreted position of the confining units marked on logs • Other notations included • Then transferred to hand-drawn cross sections
Relation of Stratigraphy to Aquifers and Confining Units • Original Scheme

MCU IB in SWFWMD Area Revised 4/2011
Configuration of MCU II Revised 4/2011 Miller, 1986 MCU II
MCUII Green is Miller’s MCU II Brown is the top of MCU II as revised 4/2011
Problem Areas • Ocala Semi-Confiner • Avon Park Permeable zone • MCU VI • Proposed extension of this unit north • MCU VIII • Proposed extension of this unit north • Transmissive LF zones UF APPZ LF
Summary • The middle confining units in central and southwest Florida have been revised from original framework • Changes proposed include: • Separate MCU I into two distinct units (IA & IB) • Slight changes to the extent of MCU II along its eastern edge • Deeper MCUs (VI) needs better definition • Include better definition of Avon Park Permeable zone using south Florida’s definition, it will be included in the Upper Floridan
