Modernism Student Responses 1 Some significant events and ideas that influenced modernism were… • World War I and II, Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis, advances in science and technology like telephones and radio, and lastly the writings of modernist authors. Sigmund Freud’s ideas allowed for more tolerant attitudes towards sexual desires and dreams. • Racial equality, advancements in science and changes in governments. For example, Franklin Roosevelt decided to create social security, welfare support, and other programs to better accommodate us. • New sexual and psychological theories introduced by various writers and other figures. For example, Sigmund Freud… This in turn led to more social changes that became a bug part of modernization, like tolerance for other’s beliefs. • The Great Depression… the changes in technology and communication. The acceptance of sexuality influenced things like burlesque shows were becoming more popular and… • The inventions made in 1900s to 1945 really changed America, from the Model T car from Ford to the atomic bomb used in World War 2. As we became more advanced, it shows us new paths to explore.

Modernism Student Responses 2 Some characteristics of modernism are • shorter poems that were more to the point and ideas that reflected national and political ambitions. • Some literature wasn’t as detailed as more classic pieces and concepts were straight to the point. • Different dialects and colloquialisms to make the stories more relatable. This allowed more people to get into these new works and spread it further. • Literature more about personal experience and went more with pop culture and fit in with whatever was really happening in the world. Some of the writing included slang and dialect to make it more real. • During the time the writing became more Americanized. Writers… wrote something about their life… colloquialisms and dialects changed demands of high art.
