Analyses of Pos’ capacity to deliver • Basic organizational description • Organizational purpose • Organizational structure and leadership • Size, scope and characteristic of members • Organizational resources • Systems and procedures • Quantitative aspects
Strength and effectiveness of the Kenyan POs • A lot needs to be done to improve the delivery levels of farmers’ organizations in the country • Ability to represent the constituency edges on professional capacity ant the strategic potential • Accountability has for long been perceived to be a problem with traditional producer organizations but not so for emergent ones • Indicators used for ID/OS monitoring over time
Factors limiting agricultural productivity • Land and land use policies need to be enacted • Issuance of land ownership certificates to be fast tracked • Farm input costs to be given appropriate attention • Process costs need to be addressed to increase competitiveness
Possible forms of credit for smallhoder farmers • Extra farm financing is most important facilitator of productivity enhancement • Currently stands at 10-12% of the total credit disbursed • Where available, its expensive, making access by smallholder farmers impossible • The packaging is inappropriate for the nature of smallholder agriculture
Environmental threat to mankind according to the Kenyan farmers • There is significant awareness of the environmental threats (climate change issues) among the farming community • There is need to focus on up take of adaptations and mitigation measures • Most of the environmental effects arise as a result of over utilization (uncontrolled) of land
Relative levels of implementation of agenda 21 in Kenya relative to the rest of the world
Conclusions • The effectiveness of producer organizations in effectively representing their constituencies is dependent on their professional capacity and the identified strategic potential • Support to ID/OS of producer organizations will go a long way in improving productivity • Production related constraints require redressing as they considerable impends productivity, • There is need to emphasize on up take of adaptations and mitigation measures
