About the Military • The United States Armed Forces: • The military forces of the United States (Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps & Navy) • The President of the U.S.: • The overall head of the military • Helps form military policy • The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD): • A federal executive department • The principal organ by which military policy is carried out • Headed by the Secretary of Defense • a civilian & a member of the cabinet • serves as the President’s second-in-command D R A F T

About the Military • National Security Council • Coordinates military action with diplomacy • Headed by National Security Advisor • Joint Chiefs of Staff • Six members who advise the President & the National Security Advisor • Includes the head of each DoD service branches (does not include the Coast Guard-falls under Dept. of Homeland Security-or National Guard) • U.S. Military • All branches work together during operations & joint missions • One of the largest militaries in terms of number of personnel • Draws manpower from pool of volunteers (conscription-draft- hasn’t been used since 1972) D R A F T
