Introduction to the Project By Ron Desmarais
The Job • Analyze Data from the new CERN particle accelerator due to go on-line in 2007.
The Problem • 12 Peta Bytes (12 million Giga Bytes) of data produced annually which needs to be analyzed. • Require Infrastructure to handle the load. • Too Expensive for any one organization to build infrastructure.
Solution • Create a Global Grid (Grid of Grids) to distribute required computational resources globally • This will distribute the expense of creating the Global Grid to participating organizations. • Allows for increase in resource usage via resource managers.
What is our Part in the Solution • Need to create a computational grid to manage the expected Load generated when the 2007 CERN Accelerator goes on-line.
GRIDX1? • We already have a Computational Grid! • Yes, however, CANARIE has identified several area’s in which Canadian Grid Infrastructure would benefit from investigation. Two of these areas are meta scheduling and registry services. • The Grid should provide both command line and web service interfaces (GridX1 lacks web service interfaces). • The Grid Scheduler and Registry Services should be improved on what GridX1 has shown us. • So an EOI (Expression of Interest) was created to address two of CANARIE’s issues with Canadian Grid Infrastructure. • Meta Scheduler :: a scheduler of schedulers • Registry :: a way for resources to advertise their resources / state.
What are we going to do? • Evaluate Several Meta-scheduling and Registry services. • Then Pick one and build it. • In particular here at UVIC, we will be just looking at the Registry Service.
What have we done so Far? • Currently we set up a test bed to evaluate GT4 and the MDS (Monitor and Discovery Service) [registry]. • Explored using Java to Test the Current Implementation.
What is Next? • Install GT4 on Mercury Head Node to start testing Job Submissions from our Test Bed (ugdev04/03 etc…). • Spend additional $10000 to expand current test bed. • Identify how we are going to put together the test bed. • Test g-Lite as Registry Service.
