IVF • Manually combining an egg and sperm • If successful: embryo transfer (physically placing the embryo in the uterus) • May be a couples sperm and eggs, or a donor for one, the other, or both • Average # of embryos transferred:4
How IVF Works • 5 Steps: • Monitor and stimulate the development of healthy egg(s) in the ovaries. • Collect the eggs. • Secure the sperm. • Combine the eggs and sperm together in the laboratory and provide the appropriate environment for fertilization and early embryo growth. • Transfer embryos into the uterus.
After IVF • Monitor for pregnancy • Blood tests and ultrasounds
Variations • Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT) • Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer (ZIFT)
Success Rates • Depends on patient characteristics and treatment approaches • Pregnancy rates ≠ live birth rates • Clinic rates are different • Chemical pregnancy • Clinical pregnancy • Miscarriages
Risks • Risks with each step of the process • Ovarian Hyper Stimulation Syndrome • Has side effects • Risks with anesthesia • Multiple pregnancies • Premature birth
Ethical Concerns Regarding IVF • These are not suggesting our opinions, but are just some things that we saw in our research and thought about.
At what point should pre-embryos/embryos be considered to have human rights?
Is it right to create babies in this arguable unnatural way?
Who should decide what are appropriate procedures for IVF?Scientists? Politicians? Church?
Should single women be allowed access to IVF procedures? How about homosexual couples?
Who should fund IVF? Patients?Insurance?Health care systems?
How long should embryos be frozen for?Should they be destroyed if they go past that time? Should frozen embryos be destroyed if patients stop paying storage fees?
