My introduction • Experience: I have been teaching math and science online for 13 years (since 1999). • Schools: Cochise College in Arizona, Kaplan University (nationwide) Wilmington University Georgia Military College starting in December. • Instructional design experience
In this presentation, we will talk about: • Sites that are out there that you might not know about: 1. Kahn Academy 2. Live Binders • Screen-cast-o-matic I did see that you all had a presentation on this recently, but I will give a brief overview. • Be organized! I will share my grade sheets. This will apply especially to online instructors.
Khan Academy is basically a site for homeschooling but it has all kinds of resources for our students as well. • There are (at the time I am creating this) 195,143619 lessons online in over twelve languages. • There are more than 3400 videos on the topics: mathematics, science, computer science, finance and economics, humanities, and test preparation. • Most are geared toward our more remedial classes but I think that everyone can find some valuable resources here.

This site can be used as a classroom if a teacher creates an account and a classroom. This would be like using MyMathLab or something similar. Most of us would not want to do this. What we would find helpful is to direct students to the videos.
On the main page, scroll down and you will see all of the videos divided into disciplines and topics
Here is an example of all of the videos in only one of those topics
This would be what a student would see if you just sent her to the general Kahn site. But you can copy and past the URL for that video into a link for her. That would take her directly to that video.
Let’s click on “understanding exponents”Here is what students would see: The student would just click on the play button to watch a short video on this topic.
You could put all of the resources directly into you course links but there is another option! Live Binders
What are live binders? Think of live binders as an online bookshelf. Each shelf holds notebooks with something in common: a course, a particular instructor, or anything that the notebooks have in common. http://www.123rf.com/photo_4836927_several-binders-in-a-bookcase.html

I teach algebra so I am going to concentrate on that area. Within the shelf are the topics. I could use these as my “Binders” • Introduction to algebra • Creating and solving linear equations • Linear functions • Systems of equations and inequalities • Ratios and proportions • Absolute value • Exponents and radicals • Logarithms • Polynomials • And on and on (ten more topics) You get the point
Or within each shelf are the course units. I could use these as the binders. For example for a general overview math course: • Unit 1: Real numbers • Unit 2: Sets • Unit 3: Algebra • Unit 4: Graphs • Unit 5: The Metric System • Unit 6: Geometry • Unit 7: Probability • Unit 8: Statistics 1 • Unit 9: Statistics 2 http://www.bindertek.com/new1binders.html
Inside each binder are resources that a student can access. Think of these as dividers in a 3-ring binder. You can then create an account free or log in with an existing account. It is easy!
Here is what you will see once inside the site. I have one shelf set up called “Basic Math”
Enter a name and description for the shelfand choose whether you want to make it public or private. An access key is required for private shelves.Click on “Create shelf”
The next step is to create a binder that will be on that shelf. Think of it as a book on that shelf. Click on “Start a Blank Binder”
Name the topic and then click on the drop-down menu and select “New Subtab” to allow access to a specific resource.
Enter the name of the resource and then copy and paste the URL of the site into the box and click on “insert”
This is what the student sees when clicking on that subtab. He then needs to click on “Go to Site” to view it. I am using a Khan site here.
The student is directed to the site and just clicks on the play button to view the video.
You can also upload resources like videos, powerpoints, and MS Word documents to your binders. I am going to show how to do this.
This binder contains quite a few tabs and subtabs. Clicking on any tab brings up the subtabs (the actual resources)
The file is there and I just need to change the name of the subtab
One more thing. If you go back to the main page and click on “Featured binders” there are thousands of binders available
Creating videos Screencast-O-maticis an online program that allows conversion of videos to mp4 files (that can be downloaded on any device!) It is free if your videos are less than 15 minutes or you can pay $15 for a membership and make longer ones. Also, a nonweb-based version is available for download. You can download it to your harddrive to use off-internet.
Let’s record a video that I created for another school and place it in a live Binder. Drag the frame.
Click on the start button and then on done when the video is completed.
