  3. Growth of Feudalism • Develops out of a need for increased security from invaders. • Monarch divides up land with lesser Lords, who in exchange provide Knights and troops for the army. King Lord Lord Knights Knights Knights Knights

  4. Development of Common Law • Henry II inherits the throne of England, and starts English Common Law. • He used and expanded local customs into Laws then sent out judges to enforce them • This standardized laws and punishments through out England. • Henry also developed the idea of a Jury who decided which cases go to the Judge.

  5. Magna Carta • Henry’s son John was greedy and always fighting with his own nobles. • They finally cornered John and forced him to sign the Magna Carta. • Affirmed a long list of noble rights • Right of Due Process (Habeas Corpus) • King can’t raise taxes without the “Great Council’s” OK

  6. Rise of Parliament • The Great Council would become Parliament • Contained 2 Houses: The House of Lords, and the House of Commons. • The Hundred Years War forced the King to repeatedly go to Parliament for money. • Parliament started forcing the King to meet demands before they would raise taxes for the war.

  7. English Civil War • Charles I tried to be an Absolute Monarch • He clashed often with Parliament. Eventually causing a Civil War. • Parliament’s forces were lead by Oliver Cromwell who defeated the King • 2 years later Parliament tried and executed Charles I

  8. Glorious Revolution • Following Cromwell’s death, Parliament restored the Monarchy. • James II made the same mistakes as his grandfather Charles and was pro-Catholic. • Parliament invited his daughter Mary and her husband William of Orange to takeover. • When William arrived James fled to France. William took over with no bloodshed.

  9. English Bill of Rights • Before they were crowned William and Mary had to sign the Bill of Rights. • It gave Parliament the “power of the purse” • Stopped the King from suspending laws. • Affirmed Habeas Corpus: no person can be arrested without being charged. • Created a Limited Monarchy.
