  2. Developing Film • Objectives • Learn the proper process of developing film • Learn how to handle chemicals and dispose of properly

  3. Developing Film • Safety • Goggles gloves and aprons must be worn at all times • Keep work area clean and organized • Clean equipment when finished • Organization • Please-One area for empty tanks, one area for loaded tanks, put name on full tank, remove name from empty tank

  4. Developing Film • Successful development come down to 3 things: • Time • Temperature • Agitation • Too much= Too dark • Too little=Too light

  5. Developing Film • Once film is in developing tank: • Developer (not a stock solution): Used to make latent image appear • Add 4oz of Super-76 to 16oz of cool water- Total of 20oz. For 1 roll- amounts can be cut in ½ for one roll on bottom of tank • Bring to 68 degrees +- 2deg. • Add to tank and use for 12.5 minutes using Standard Agitation • When finished- dispose in waste tank NOT DOWN SMALL DARKROOM SINK! Can be put in large darkroom sink. • Standard Agitation • Shake 30 seconds • Wait 30 sec. • Shake 5 sec. • Repeat– Shaking for 5 seconds for every 30 seconds until time is up

  6. Developing Film • Stop Bath (Stock Solution) • Used to stop the developing process • 20 oz. • Room temperature • 30 seconds • Standard Agitation • Dispose in waste tank or large darkroom sink • Water Rinse • Fill up-shake around- dispose • Used to prevent contamination of next chemical

Developing Film • Fixer (Stock Solution): • Used to make image permanent, makes film no longer sensitive to light • You must get to this step in one class period, can be left in overnight • 20 Oz. • Room Temperature • 4 minutes- Standard Agitation-then check for clearness • Repeat if necessary (purple, can’t see through negatives in unexposed areas. • Reuse! • If bad, it must be disposed of in Silver Recovery Tank!!- Do not put down Drain!! • Water Rinse- to prevent contamination of next chemical

Developing Film • Hypo Clearing Agent (Hypo) (stock solution): • Used to help deactivate residuals and aid in rinse process • 20 Oz. • Room Temperature • 4 minutes • Standard Agitation • Reuse!- It will turn purple when bad • Dispose of in waste tank or large darkroom sink • Water Wash • Remove top • Let cool water flow in and out for 5 minutes

  9. Developing Film • Photo Flo • Used to prevent water spots when drying • ½ capful to full tank (20 oz) of water • Standard Agitation for 30 seconds • Dispose • Do not rinse suds off • Hang film to dry overnight, clipped at top and bottom, with name on it.

  10. Cleanup Wipe down counters Put away equipment Empty disposal tank Put away safety equipment—NEATLY!
